Sungate went into Tuesday night’s match as favourites and within the opening quarter of an hour could have opened up a big lead with a number of chances created. But they were thwarted by a combination of woodwork, heroic defending and some good saves from the Lions keeper. Having weathered that early storm, Loughton Lions did create some opportunities of their own with the Sungate defence given a good workout and ‘Gate’s stand-in keeper needing to make some smart tops. The sides went in level at the break at 0-0.

The second half began as the first half had with Sungate having the best of the early opportunities and they took a lead within a couple of minutes of the restart with Mujib Ayoola netting to give his side a 1-0 lead. That lead was double shortly after as Gate took advantage of a set piece with Darren Reid helping the ball over the line from a corner. Lions bounced back strongly from that set back creating the best of the chances but Sungate held firm to win 2-0 and lift the cup.

Congratulations to Paul Phipps and his team for completing the league and cup double this season and to Loughton Lions for performing valiantly on the night and giving their absolute all for the cause.
