May & Baker E.C. A were crowned the new Premier Division Cup Winners as they defeated Jolof Sports Club in a terrific match by 2 goals to 1 in front of a bumper crowd of 187 supporters.
Going into the game, it was hard to select a possible winner with both sides locked very closely in the league table and their two league fixtures this year only seeing a single goal difference in the scoreline.
The game started very evenly with both sides having passages of possession on a typically excellent surface at Dagenham & Redbridge FC. It was May & Baker who took the lead, as Lewis Edmunds swivelled and finished well after a corner wasn’t fully cleared by Jolof to give Bakers a lead.
This sparked Jolof into action who started to grab the initiative in the game with their passing game using every inch of the Victoria Road surface. They got their reward not long before the break as Jeff Cobblah made a break down the left at pace before pulling the ball across the face of goal for Guy Tahin to strike in at the far post to bring them level.
After the break, Jolof started the stronger and looked the more likely to score a winner but the best chances fell to Bakers who should have then led as a strike from 12 yards went wide of the post. Then with about twenty minutes to go, the crucial moment arrived as Kane Messenger struck from the edge of the box with an effort that looked to be going wide but crept inside the post to spark celebrations in the stands.
Jolof pushed hard in the remaining minutes to get an equaliser that could have taken the game to penalties but alas a goal didn’t arrive for them and referee, Endrit Malaveci, blew his whistle to signal full time and confirm May & Baker E.C. A as our Premier Division Cup Winners for this season.
Congratulations to Neil Reeve and his players on their achievement! Also well done to Jolof Sports Club who made this a terrific evening and to all the fans for their support.
Focus now turns to this Thursday’s final as Kitgum Boys take on Grove United in the Division One Cup Final at Dagenham & Redbridge FC.
