Chigwell overcame a 2-0 deficit against Three Colts in Tuesday night’s Division 1 Cup Final at Dagenham & Redbridge FC to earn an enthralling penalty shootout victory.
Three Colts were looking to make it a hat-trick of cup wins and were ahead early on with a stunning effort from distance in just the 6th minute. And just three minutes later, they had doubled their lead with yet another brilliant strike from long range which fired into the top corner. But the drama still wasn’t over as in the 16th minute, Chigwell pulled a goal back as their left back unleased a devilish cross-cum-shot which unbelievably flew over the Colts keeper from 40 yards. And before the half was over, they had chalked off the deficit completely as Chigwell poked home from close range, following up the rebound from the keeper, and bringing the sides level at 2-2. Having suffered those early setbacks, Chigwell ended the half with momentum swinging in their favour.
Chigwell came out firing in the second half and created a succession of chances to take the lead but a combination of some wayward finishing, saves from the Colts keeper along with some brave defending, Colts held firm. That was until the 59th minute when Chigwell swung in a corner which was headed in by an unmarked man in the box to give them a deserved 3-2 lead. But this game had yet another twist as Three Colts levelled it up just moments later, taking full advantage of a set piece of their own, the ball falling to the feet of their man just a few yards out as he squeezed the ball past the Chigwell keeper into the far corner for 3-3. Chigwell had the lion’s share of the chances from then on but were unable to force a winner as the game headed to the dreaded penalty shootout.
The shootout was equally enthralling with both sides missing a number of kicks with the keepers in fine form to keep them out. But a big save saw Colts miss their fifth spot-kick, leaving Chigwell to wrap up a 3-2 shootout victory to lift the Division 1 Cup! Congratulations to everyone involved at the club on a terrific achievement. A special word also to Three Colts who were magnificent too and lit up the occasion themselves with some stunning goals.
